How to Start a Small Business From Home

You have this really excellent idea that you want to turn into a business so you can work from home, be in control of your schedule, and have more flexibility to do the the things you want. And maybe even work in your pajamas and watch a little more Netflix (no judgement here)!

Working from home is the dream, but you have no idea where to get started.

I’ve got you covered! In the video below I’ll be sharing my top tips on how you can start a small business from home.

So how exactly do you start a small business from home? There’s no one right or wrong way to go about starting your small business, but here are a few tips that helped me as I grew Holly Meyer Design into my full-time home business.

1. Write Your Business Plan.

You probably already have your business idea in your head, but take it a step further and write it down on paper. Write down who you’re going to market your idea to, how you’re going to reach those people, and how your idea is different and unique from all the other businesses who may be doing the same thing as you.

2. Setup your workspace.

It can be your dining room table, or a corner in your bedroom. The most important thing is to declare a certain space in your house that will act as your office. This will help you keep all of your office supplies and paperwork in one space as opposed to strewn all over your house. And you know when you sit down in your space, that is where you are going to get work done. The best part about having a separate workspace in your house is that your office square footage is tax deductible!

3. Determine your work schedule.

After you have your workspace sorted out, it’s time to determine which days and hours you are going to work. Consider all your other responsibilities such as your day job, household chores, and meal preparation. Figure out when you can realistically work to grow your business without sacrificing the most important things in life such as your health and relationships with loved ones.

If you live with family or a roommate, tell the other people in your house what your working schedule is so they will be respectful of those hours and not interrupt you while you’re working.

4. Setup your email, website, and phone number.

You need to get those clients, sell your products and services, and run your business somehow… right? Get a custom domain for both email purposes and your website because this will help set you apart as a professional. Sign up for a separate business phone number through Google Voice so you don’t have to give out your personal cell phone number when networking or booking clients. This will help you create more boundaries between your personal life and business life.

5. Make your business legal.

It can be tempting to hold off on this last step until you make a certain amount of money, but the sooner you can make your business legal - the sooner you will treat your business like an actual business and not a hobby. Once you receive the notification that your business has been filed and is now recognized by your State, your dream of owning your business will be that much more real and you’ll notice a positive shift in your mindset.
